Lane takes you through some of the lessons he learned from his own lay off from GE, as well as his observations of other issues that can impact your situation. Some of the issues that can hold you back in your home business include:

  • Lack of communication
  • Arrogance
  • B.S.
  • Distraction
  • Wishful thinking

All of these items cloud your judgment and can result in the loss of your business or career. Lane also looks at the lies we tell ourselves, and how we can stop hiding from the truth and make the changes that make us better. One of the items I found most useful, though, was the idea of focusing on a core business, rather than letting distractions keep you from success. Lane points out that awards and speeches are often distractions — not your core business. And, of course, you need to avoid wishful thinking. Look at the situation as it is, and not how you want it to be.

    Distraction and wishful thinking come in cycles for me. If things are slow at the moment, well… I can come back to business later. If things are picking up, I’m making predictions months away.
