Book Review: Losing It! by Bill Lane

Are you headed for a career train wreck? Bill Lane helps you avoid the pitfalls that bring down even the savviest executives.

Many executives find themselves on the brink of career disaster because of various problems. Indeed, as you work to run your home business, you might find yourself falling prey to some of the same problems that impact many of the savviest executives.

If you want to avoid those pitfalls, you might receive some solid insights from reading Losing It! Behaviors and Mindsets that Ruin Careers: Lessons on Protecting Yourself from Avoidable Mistakes. This book is written by Bill Lane, long time Jack Welch speechwriter and former insider at GE. It's an interesting look at executives, and the mistakes they make.

What's Your Mindset?

As a home business owner, your mindset matters. The very things that cause problems for executives in big companies can also hold you back as a small business owner. Even if you aren't a home business owner, you can make mistakes that hold you up during your career — and these mistakes are often avoidable.

Lane takes you through some of the lessons he learned from his own lay off from GE, as well as his observations of other issues that can impact your situation. Some of the issues that can hold you back in your home business include:

  • Lack of communication
  • Arrogance
  • B.S.
  • Distraction
  • Wishful thinking

All of these items cloud your judgment and can result in the loss of your business or career. Lane also looks at the lies we tell ourselves, and how we can stop hiding from the truth and make the changes that make us better. He also looks at when micromanagement is a good idea, and how to tell whether or not you are becoming too involved.

The key to success as a home business owner, or in a more traditional career, is understanding reality, holding on to your integrity, and letting go the things that are holding you back. Lane shows you how to do this by drawing on his own experience as a corporate player, as well as from interviews with executives of well-known companies.

One of the items I found most useful, though, was the idea of focusing on a core business, rather than letting distractions keep you from success. Lane points out that awards and speeches are often distractions — not your core business. And, of course, you need to avoid wishful thinking. Look at the situation as it is, and not how you want it to be.

Bottom Line

Losing It?is a great look at the avoidable problems that many executives have run into. It's a great resource for the home business owner who is ready to break out of a mindset holding him or her back. It's a great help for those who are looking to improve life, career, and home business.

Distraction and wishful thinking come in cycles for me. If things are slow at the moment, well… I can come back to business later. If things are picking up, I’m making predictions months away.

Sounds like a good read to plant your feet on solid ground!

It really was a helpful read to help ground yourself, and acknowledge the realities involved with your career, and even being an entrepreneur.
