Do You Sometimes Let Things Slide with Your Home Business?

I'm ridiculously busy right now. And that means things are sliding a little bit with my home business.

Things are busy right now for me. VERY busy. With everything going on, from my involvement with the Plutus Awards ?to the fact that I am publishing a book, not to mention other activities in other aspects of my life, the business part of my home business is sliding a little bit.

I've been erratic with my deadlines. Sometimes, I've skipped posts altogether, if the client has enough of a backlog to get him or her through the next couple of weeks. I feel like I've turned from the most reliable freelance writer in the personal finance space to someone who's sort of like most other freelance writers out there.

Overcome Writer's Block

And, of course, I'm having trouble posting on this blog. I'm not getting paid directly to post here, you see. I'm ghostwriting?three different books right now, I still write for more than 20 blogs, and I'd really, really like to be on the board for a local scholarship program. Plus, I'm a PTA mom now. (What was I thinking?)

It's times like these when I really look at my life (and the lack of sleep involved) and I wonder if it's time for a change with my home business. When you start letting things slide a bit, that's usually a pretty good indication that it's time to switch things.

Maybe it's time to take your home business in another direction. Maybe it's time to sell your business and get started on a new project. At the very least, I'm looking at my workload and wondering if the clients I've been letting slide to some small degree are the ones that I should just be letting go. I hate to do it because I love all of my clients. Most of them are people I consider friends. It's hard to terminate business relationships with people you like on a personal level.

But, hey, I'm going to FinCon next week. I almost always come back from attending a conference with new perspective, new energy, and a determination to make my home business better — in whatever direction my inspiration takes me.

What about you? Do you sometimes find yourself letting things slide with your home business? What do you do about it?

  1. Wow Miranda, you are crazy busy. All of your staff writing, plus 3 ghost writing projects?! I don’t know how you do it.

There are days I don’t know how I do it, either. And, actually, there are some days that some of it just doesn’t get done 🙁

I would wait until after fincon to make any big decisions about what yo do. That way you will have a better feel on the future.

That’s the plan. I usually wait until after FinCon is over to make changes to the way I do things. I often get new ideas, new energy, and new direction after attending FinCon. It’s really what keeps me going.

    1. Sometimes it gets a little overwhelming, but overall I’m pretty satisfied with the way things are. But I do feel bad when I let the home business slide a bit.
