One of the questions I’m asked most often is whether it makes more sense to self-publish than to work with a “real” publisher.
As with so many things in freelancing and in life, the answer depends on what you are trying to accomplish. When you self-publish, you have more control over the content and the timeline of your work. You are also more likely to make more money because you don’t have to worry about the publisher taking its cut before paying you royalties.
However, working with a “real” publisher can be helpful if you are trying to raise your profile and visibility. Plus, a publisher can help you market your book and take care of many of the logistics that you would have to manage if you decided to self-publish.
